Two Wheels

There’s a law in New York City now that parking garages have to let you park your bicycle.  In New York’s never-ending wisdom, the law takes no view on what the proper price for parking your bike might be.

Here’s what we have in my office building:

So more than $200 per month (plus huge taxes) to shove your little bike in some greasy corner under a leaky ceiling, and, if you just want to park for the day:  same price as a car.

Now I’m no green social activist, but what did they think was going to happen?  The idea of making garages have bike parking available is great, particularly in a city where you have to be insane to lock your bike on the street for more than 30 seconds.  But seriously, if you are going to pass this kind of law, make it mean something instead of just being another entry on the seemingly never-ending list of New York-related governmental stupidity.

Now the Abe Beame-Gerry Ford contretemps (nice word, huh?) has little or nothing to do with this, but I felt the need to include the best Daily News cover ever anyhow.

Can you imagine what they’ll charge for the plane/car?
