This morning’s Times has an article about how the children of the rich and famous have been able to get internships at City Hall. I don’t have any real problem with that, it’s just how the world works. But the inability of several of these past interns to recognize or admit how they received them is a bit much. I almost feel sorry for these kids, they don’t realize how idiotic they look pretending that their positions were all gained on merit. A few examples:

Jacob Doctoroff, the son of the very powerful former deputy Mayor Daniel Docotoroff:

“I truthfully couldn’t tell you how I got the internship,” he said. “But you’d be working with a bunch of 35- to 45-year-olds, and you didn’t have a sense that you were in an internship program.”

He was in the 8th grade.

Luke Russert, the son of the late Tim Russert:

Asked what role his connections played in landing the job, he said: “I don’t really know about that. I went through the application process like anyone else.”

The summer of this internship was a busy one for the ambitious young Mr. Russert, who was also working for Conan O’Brien.

Louisa Aviles assures us that her internship:

“… had nothing to do with my dad,”

who happens to be president of the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation.

Also, Lloyd Blankfein’s son, Alexander, had one while still in high school, and so on.

Again, all this doesn’t really bother me much, people use the advantages they have, particularly for their kids; and others do favors for their friends. Is it fair, no, but what, exactly, is. But these folks ought to at least have some self awareness, some knowledge of their advantages in life. Except for Luke Russert, I mean, he’s earned everything he’s got.
