EV Grieve passes along word that Howard O’Brien, longtime bartender at Sophie’s on East 5th, has passed away at the young age of 56.

Sad news. I didn’t know him personally, but I certainly bought a lot of $1 (or was it $2) McSorley’s from him in the late 80’s and early 90’s. I haven’t been back to Sophie’s in years. I was turned off when one weekend night I wandered in and I was served a beer in a plastic cup. Such is life, but it was (and hopefully still is) a great bar, with a great jukebox, nasty-ass bathroom, and a pool table that I kicked ass on back in the day. Luckily, the news of its demise a few years back was greatly exaggerated.

R.I.P. Mr. O’Brien.

Sad news, indeed. Sophie’s is one of the greats and Howard will be missed by the regulars there. R.I.P.

I’m sorry to hear of Mr. O’Brien’s passing. However, I can not let “…and a pool table that I kicked ass on back in the day” pass without comment. For real? “back in the day”? Were you a sort of Fast Eddie Felsonstein?

Look, some of us recognize that 20 years was a long time ago, so yes, back in the day.

And yes, I used to play pool regularly and quite well at the Sophie’s table. You got a problem with that?
