It’s kind of a blah day here in New York.  Too much work to do, too little desire to do it.  Baseball season is over.  Nothing particularly great going on (although the Breeders Cup does begin this afternoon).  You know, generally status quo surliness here at THEG.

But wait, what’s this? I’m glancing over at Midtown Lunch and I read this tidbit:

Sietsema Loves NYC Fried Chicken
We’ve always thought of NYC Fried Chicken (on 8th Ave. & 39th) as the “Bastard Son” of the 8th Ave. fried chicken scene, but not so says Robert Sietsema of the Village Voice. Yesterday he called their chicken “one of the best versions of the classic dish found anywhere in Manhattan.” Clearly we need to do an updated fried chicken round up… you know… for science.

Holy crap. That’s some significant and awesome news. You know I love fried chicken, and NYC Fried Chicken is well within my geographic comfort zone. Now Midtown Lunch neglected to link to Sietsema’s comment, so I had to dig around and find it. But sure enough, it’s true:

At the corner of 39th and Eighth Avenue — poultry nirvana! Lightly crusted, perfectly fried, N-Y-C’s fried bird is much better than Hill Country’s.

We’ve all had the experience of heading for the Port Authority to make a bus departure, being hungry as hell, and not finding anyplace near the terminal that had halfway decent looking food.

Well, the problem is solved, especially if you don’t mind getting your fingers a little greasy. N-Y-C Fried Chicken (598 Eighth Avenue, 212-719-1599) produces one of the best versions of the classic dish found anywhere in Manhattan. The pieces are modest-sized but cheap. They’ve been only lightly dusted with flour, and fried to a golden brown in fresh grease. What could be better?

What could be better indeed. This crappy-ass Friday is looking up.

That chicken looks pretty fucking tasy, if only the joint served beer.

Someone a year ago or so did a review of the whole 8th Avenue fried chicken scene, perhaps the wonder boys at HEG could ferret it out and post it for a refresher. I’d be surprised if it didn’t include NYC Fried Chicken.
