Call Me Moby

March 15, 2011

This kind of blows me away and makes me sad. Seems Sperm Whales have their own individual “names“. I’m assuming they are not names like Lou, David, Tony, Sandy, etc.–though I think Lou would be a pretty good name for a whale, but still. Over the last 3-400 years we’ve killed thousands of animals that were calling out to each other by and identifying themselves by name.

I’ve heard vegetarians say they won’t eat anything with a face, I will. In somewhat more reflective, I think Al would call them soft, moments I do have some qualms about eating mammals– chickens, turkeys and fish can go fuck themselves– but, in the end, I more or less think it’s allowed. And even if I there were something that I wouldn’t eat, dog let’s say, I feel uncomfortable about imposing my arbitrary values on someone else. Cow yes, dog no, pig yes, cat no, and so on. But I think we can draw a pretty firm line here, if it has a name, and not one given by a human, it ought not be eaten, hunted or harassed in any way. Self identified creatures ought not to be exploited in such a manner, we should not eat or hunt anything that may say “yeah, I’m Tony”.

How do you know that cows don’t use names for each other?

They are a fairly well observed animal and no one has ever noticed anything of the sort.

You’ve got to embrace the arbitrary, my brother. Your position is as principled and well-founded — and as lacking in principle and foundation — as every other rule-based view of which animals to eat. Well, except for blowfish. The decision to eat blowfish has a little more going on, just ask Homer.
