36 U.S.C. § 110

Dude, it’s fucking Flag Day. It’s the law. Although the law looks kind of optional. The President is only “requested” to issue a proclamation, and the people are only “urged” to observe Flag Day.

TITLE 36 > Subtitle I > Part A > CHAPTER 1 > § 110

§ 110. Flag Day

(a) Designation.— June 14 is Flag Day.

(b) Proclamation.— The President is requested to issue each year a proclamation—

(1) calling on United States Government officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on Flag Day; and

(2) urging the people of the United States to observe Flag Day as the anniversary of the adoption on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

Assuming Flag Day has duly been proclaimed, I am going to accept the urging and observe it. I urge you to as well.

Easy for you to tell people to fly a flag, but many of our readers are NYC apt. dwellers and don’t have flag poles from which to unfurl their banners.

Hang it out your window, off your fire escape, sew a patch on the back of your Levi’s if you’re a hippie, get a flag tattoo, wear a flag hat. Use your imagination, man.

I already have something on the back of my Levis, and I just don’t think an American flag would go with the eagle already there.
