I wanted to throw up a quick post not just to get that dog’s ass off the top of the blog but to note an awesome show we saw last night called Cotton Club Parade put on by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center people.

It was a recreation of Duke Ellington’s sort of variety show performances at the Cotton Club with a band, dancers (including tap) and all kinds of great singing. It will come as no surprise that the late great Peg Leg Bates was a regular back in the day. And happily the current incarnation is not “restricted” like the original.

An Abel Green Variety review of the time began:

The Cotton Club is the Club Richman of Harlem. It is the foremost black and tan cafe featuring a whale of a colored revue that matches any of the preceding editions, all of which have been noteworthy for their artistry and talent.

It’s only playing until Tuesday, but if you can make it to City Center to catch it I heartily recommend it.
